Trucking Accident Reports and News

Many different types of trucks command the roads in the U.S. today, as trucking is now the leading transporter of goods in the country and is expected to expand even more in the upcoming years. Trucks by their nature are massive and hard to maneuver, which can make for dangerous conditions while driving. In fact, as the number of trucks grows, more and more victims have their lives put at stake.

Trucking accidents have made the headlines because their very nature makes such collisions catastrophic and generally involves many casualties.  Trucking accidents reports and news highlight the need for safer guidelines and more accountability.  Research is constantly being done to study ways to improve the tendency of trucks to cause dangerous and often deadly accidents.  One recent study reported that lower speed limit for trucks increases accidents while another accuses states of not properly reporting the number of deadly accidents caused by trucks.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas announced in March that a new transportation study shows that the increase in speed variation caused by differing speed limits for vehicles between rural and interstate highways leads to a larger number of people passing each other and thus causing more accidents.  The researchers agreed, however, that lower speed limits help to improve some trucking mechanisms, such braking and maneuvering.

Another report released by the General Accounting Office cites that states are not consistently reporting vehicle accidents that involve the trucking industry and notes that while trucks account for less than 3 percent of the nation's registered vehicles in 2003, they were involved in over 11 percent of all fatal crashes.
