The injection known as Trayslol that is often used to prevent blood loss during CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) surgery and other major heart surgeries has been in the national spotlight recently as it has been linked to an increased risk of serious kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes. The New England Journal of Medicine published a report January of 2006 that studied the health risks of Trasylol and the study found that the administration of Trasylol may increase the risk of serious side effects among patients undergoing CABG.
The findings of the study were alarming and the Journal reported that the risk of heart attack is increased by 48 percent, the risk of heart failure is increased by 109 percent, and the risk of stroke is increased by a shocking 181 percent. These findings have caused Bayer, the distributor of Trasylol to receive notoriety in both the local and national media and the controversy seems far from over.
In addition to the New England Journal of Medicine report, another study linked Trasylol usage to a higher risk for kidney damage, including acute and chronic renal failure. This research was recently published in the online edition of Transfusion. The FDA was concerned as well and issued a public health advisory on February 8, 2006.
