The infected tissue and body parts scandal that has rocked the medical community is growing, as more and more patients are learning that they may have been one of the recipients of illegally harvested tissue that has thrown tissue recovery company Biomedical Tissue Service into the national spotlight.
The infected tissue and body parts scandal began to unravel when a doctor at tissue processing company LifeCell noticed some discrepancies in documents relating to tissues bought from New Jersey company Biomedical Tissue Service and alerted the FDA about concerns, as well as issued a recall on the tissues on September 30, 2005.
Other processing companies unknowingly purchased the tainted tissues as well, including Tutogen Medical, Inc., Regeneration Technologies, Inc., Lost Mountain Tissue Bank, and the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas. These companies then sent the tissues on to hospitals and other medical facilities to be used in transplants, skin grafts, and other surgical procedures. Although these companies deny that the tissue could have been infectious, citing the rigorous cleansing and irradiation process used on all tissue, the infected tissue and body parts scandal may have in fact put thousands of patients at risk for such diseases as HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis.
Medtronic Inc, a Minneapolis-based medical distributor, reported that it acquired more than 13,000 pieces from distributor Regeneration Technologies Inc. and that at least 8,000 pieces that came originally came from Biomedical Tissue Service and were implanted. Regeneration and at least two other companies, LifeCell Corp. and Tutogen Medical Inc., have already destroyed more than $5 million in the illegally harvested tissue.
