The now-terminated New Jersey tissue recovery company known as Biomedical Tissue Service has come under fire from authorities and the medical community as a whole for selling illicitly acquired human tissues that were not subjected to necessary safety testing protocols.  As the horrific tainted tissue scandal grows and more evidence of illegally harvested and untested tissue implantation emerges, reports of potential infections continues to rise.

Biomedical Tissue Service is accused of taking tissue and organs from corpses without permission for loved ones, and replacing them with screws and other hardware in order to hide the removal.  The company then sold these tissues to unsuspecting tissue processors like Tutogen Medical, Inc., Medtronic Inc., and Regeneration Technologies, Inc., who then sent them on to hospitals and other medical facilities to be used for transplants, grafts, and dental implants, among other procedures.

Because these tissues were not tested by Biomedical Tissue Service for contaminates as they are legally bound to be, there is a very real risk that the contraband tissue could have been infected with such diseases as AIDS, syphilis and hepatitis.  Though the FDA says that the risk of infection is small, the potential for dangerous and deadly diseases is a tragic consequence of Biomedical Tissue Service’s illicit activity.

Reports of potential infections have sparked fears throughout the country, and even across other countries such as Canada that received suspect tissue.  The controversy is already creating anxieties for patients who have started to receive letters from hospital officials and investigators about the risk of developing HIV (1 or 2), hepatitis B and C and syphilis.

There is no valid excuse for jeopardizing the health of consumers and putting transplant patients and other victims at risk for such diseases as HIV and syphilis.  Although Biomedical Tissue Service did an unspeakable act by removing tissues from loved ones without permission, the companies that purchased these samples without ensuring their integrity are also at fault.  If you are one of the countless victims of this scandal, or if one of your loved ones was disrespected so egregiously after death, make sure to contact an experienced and knowledgeable tainted tissue attorney as soon as possible.

The law firm of Steigerwalt & Associates is here to help victims of Tainted Tissue throughout the country.
