The chilling effects of a company’s illegally harvest and sales of body parts and tissues from patients without consent has spread throughout the United States, and has even affected patients in other countries, including Canada.  When now defunct tissue recovery company Biomedical Tissue Service began to be implicated in this gruesome crime, details emerged that showed that other companies involved in the investigation had some serious questions to answer about security controls and consumer safety.

A number hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the country unknowingly received these tainted body parts in the period between early 2004 and September of 2005 and used them in transplants, skin grafts, and other procedures.  This means that thousands of people could be at risk for such conditions as syphilis, AIDS, and Hepatitis B and C, and in fact anyone who received any of these tissues before 2005 could be infected with a disease.

The tissues were first sent to tissue processing firms like Tutogen Medical, Inc., Medtronic Inc., Regeneration Technologies, Inc., SpinalGraft Technologies, LLC, Lost Mountain Tissue Bank, LifeCell Corp., and Blood & Tissue Center of Central Texas. These companies involved in the investigation unwittingly sent them on to the hospitals and other transplant facilities, where they were implanted into patients who are now discovering the grisly details.

As a result of the FDA investigation and the evidence of tainted tissues, Lifecell Inc. announced a voluntary recall of products that utilized tissues from Biomedical Tissue Services, including AlloDerm used burn and periodontal procedures, Repliform used in gynecological and urological surgeries, and GraftJacket, made for orthopedic applications.

The Biomedical Tissue Services story is not only emotionally disturbing, for it could have profound consequences for the thousands of victims who received potentially unsafe tissues.  The families of lost loved ones who were unjustly harvested for organs and tissues are also left with heartbreak and anger.  Medtronic and other companies involved in the investigation have to take responsibility for failing to protect the safety of their patients by ensuring the integrity of the tissues that they received.  If you were a victim of the Biomedical deception, make sure to contact a compassionate and experienced tainted tissue attorney who can help you fight for the answers – and the compensation – that you deserve.

The law firm of Steigerwalt & Associates is here to help victims of Tainted Tissue throughout the country.
