Hazing
Hazing has been an alarming yet hidden tradition throughout academic history, but it has never been as dangerous as it has become today. Some have even deemed the rise in hazing incidents a “silent epidemic” on campuses today. Unfortunately, the consequences of hazing are still often shrouded in secrecy because the victims are hesitant or afraid about blaming the perpetrators out of fear of retribution or a feeling of shame.
Hazing can take many forms and can become problematic on a variety of levels. Specific incidents of hazing can be overt or subtle, and victims are often left humiliated and embarrassed, and often even dangerously injured. Although hazing is officially outlawed by school authorities and governments, it still remains one of the most insidious and destructive dangers facing students and members of military organizations and other entities each year – and perpetrators of hazing often go unpunished, unless there is a specific situation that becomes newsworthy.
The more innocent varieties of hazing in the past have given way to a more violent trend where people become powerless victims of degrading – and sometimes violent – humiliation. Hazing incidents themselves have become more infrequent in the last few years, but many experts believe that these incidents have merely gone underground in response to negative publicity in the media, and dangerous hazing is believed to be a big problem that is merely under the radar at the moment. This kind of underground situation is illustrated by incidents like the Glenbrook High School hazing scene in May of 2003 that caused five students to be sent to the hospital for emergency care.
If your child or adolescent has been the victim of hazing, or if you personally have suffered in such an incident, you may be entitled to financial compensation for the unjust and unnecessary pain and suffering. Make sure to contact an experienced attorney who intimately understands hazing and its consequences and can fight for the justice that victims deserve. Don’t wait – call a school hazing lawyer today.
