The use of restraints in psychiatric
wards is often necessary to prevent patients
from hurting themselves and others. However,
psychiatric wards must exercise appropriate
safety precautions to avoid the injury
or death of patients.
A survey conducted between 1988 and
1998 found 142 restraint-related deaths
of patients in psychiatric wards and
hospitals, group homes, residential facilities
for troubled youth, mental retardation
facilities, and group homes nationwide.
114 of these cases were able to determine
the age of the patient, and of this number
26 percent of victims were children.
The death of anyone under medical supervision
is tragic, but the death of children
through unsafe restraint procedures is
horrific. If someone you love has been
a victim of psychiatric ward restraint
death, do not hesitate to seek justice
and call attention to this serious problem
in the mental health community. Your
decision to contact an attorney and take
legal action may finally bring an end
to the terror hundreds have experienced.
