Permax - Facts

Permax is the brand name for the drug called Pergolide, and it's become quite prevalent in the medical industry in recent years. Below is a brief overview of the drug in regards to its uses, side effects and FDA alerts and publication notations.

Permax Prescribed for:

Permax is prescribed for those patients who have Parkinson's Disease, and it is typically used in combination with levodopa in order to maximize its effectiveness. The drug is taken orally, and the number of doses per day and the strength of each pill will be outlined by your doctor. Permax should be stored at room temperature and away from moisture and sunlight. In most patients, it takes at least a few weeks for the medication to take full effect.

Side Effects of Permax:

Permax can create several different side effects, and they range in nature from minor to severe. Specific side effects that have been reported include headaches, nausea, dizziness, constipation, loss of appetite, dry mouth or drowsiness. In some cases, patients have suffered from trouble moving or walking, hallucinations, confusion, severe muscle stiffness, trouble sleeping or vision problems.

Heart Valve Problems, Leakage.

The most severe side effects reported with the use of Permax include the development of heart valve problems, and leg or foot swelling. If you've suffered from any of these side effects, you need to contact your doctor immediately to relay this information and to receive proper guidance.

Consumer Warnings

In 2003, Eli Lilly & Co., the manufacturer of Permax, distributed a letter to all medical professionals warning them that the drug may cause patients to fall asleep with little or no warning. This creates a dangerous situation because patients have reported feeling completely alert immediately prior to falling asleep, and depending on what patients may be doing at the time, such as driving, this sudden sleep can cause serious injury or even death.

As a result of this discovery, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) worked with Eli Lilly & Co. in order to immediately modify the warning labels on all containers of Permax so that doctors and patients were adequately warned of this potentially-deadly side effect.
