The Longshoreman and Harbor Workers Compensation Act was passed in 1927 to protect land workers injured on board a vessel. This law originally only covered certain classifications of workers, but it was amended several times to cover a broad scope of people.
Then in 1972 the law was changed again to cover injuries that occur on docks and land near the ships, and even recreational vessels had to protect their workers. The new act now stipulates that longshoremen and harbor workers must receive medical benefits, rehabilitation, and compensation for lost wages if they are injured or if preexisting injuries or conditions worsen during their work.
If you are a longshoreman, harbor worker, or anyone employed in the maritime industries, you may be covered under the Longshoreman and Harbor Workers Compensation Act. Contact an attorney and discover your rights today.
