Most U.S. states hold commercial vendors of alcohol (bars, taverns and package stores) responsible for injury caused by intoxicated patrons. A patron of a bar cannot collect for injury to himself, but a third party injured by the actions of a patron can collect from a bar under certain circumstances. This issue of bar liability is especially important when the injured individual has little or no insurance to cover a serious or fatal injury.

Bar liability laws vary from state-to-state. In some states, commercial vendors will only be held responsible for serving alcohol to minors. In other states, the amount of damages that can be collected from a vendor is set at a specific amount under the theory that the major share of blame for the injury should be placed on the intoxicated individual.

An injury sustained at the expense of an individual under the influence of alcohol is unacceptable. Those who abide by the law should not suffer the indignities of those who choose to ignore it, nor should they be forced to pay any costs associated with the injury they sustained. Contacting a diligent and aggressive personal injury lawyer will go a long way in getting you back on the road to recovery, both physically and financially.

The law firm of Steigerwalt & Associates is here to help victims of Liquor Liability throughout the country.
