Wego Kite Tube

"Kite Tubing" is a popular new water sport that involves fast boats, open water, and inflatable rafts called "kites." One of the most popular kite tubes is manufactured by Sportsstuff, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska, and was named "Sports Product of the Year" by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.

The Wego Kite Tube is an inflatable, circular, 10-foot-wide yellow raft with handles designed to be towed behind a powerboat. The theory behind the craft is that when as the boat picks up speed it will propel the rider into the air at velocities of upwards of 55 miles per hour and heights of 15 feet. The passenger should then ride a cushion of air behind the boat, gently floating until the boat comes to a complete stop.

Wego Kite Tube Recalled

The reality is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recorded injuries such as chest and back trauma, facial injuries such as jaw fractures, unconsciousness, punctured lung, and a broken neck due to accidents resulting from the proper and intended use of the Wego Kite Tube. On July 12, 2006, Wego recalled almost 19,000 Kite Tubes due to reports of 39 injuries and two deaths allegedly caused by accidents involving their product.

Although the Kite Tube bore the stern admonition "Never Kite higher than you are willing to fall," few users could have anticipated the potential danger of this product until it was already in use. Unfortunately, controlling such an unstable air platform is beyond the capabilities of most people, and fast-moving boats and treacherous water conditions can combine to create a dangerous and potentially deadly scenario.
