8/14/2007 Mattel Issues Second Recall in Two Weeks:
Approximately 9 million toys are being recalled by children's toy manufacturer, Mattel Inc. This brings the grand total of recalled toys in the last month to a staggering 10.5 million. The recall includes 253,000 “Sarge” jeeps from the popular children's movie “Cars,” that may contain lead paint. In the United States, children's toys cannot exceed .06 percent lead content due to its fatal repercussions in young children. Additionally placed on the recalled list are 683,000 Tanner and Barbie play sets, as well as 1 million Doggie Day Care sets and 345,000 action figures, all for small magnets considered a very high risk for choking hazards. Since the two recalls, Lee Der Co., in China has been forbidden by Chinese officials from exporting all products. American faith in Chinese-based manufacturers and their products continues to decline as issues such as this are keep arising.
At a time when children are exploring and learning about themselves and their surrounding environment, the toys that promote such development are becoming more dangerous to purchase and use. The concern surrounding toy recalls continue to be a common focal point in the consumer world and media alike. If you believe your child is suffering medically due to ramifications caused by this or any recalled children's products please contact our firm immediately for a case review by one of our legal specialists. No child should have to endure the consequences of a careless corporate mistake.
------------end of update for 8/14/2007----------
The U.S. Product Safety Commission reported that toy manufacturing
giant Mattel was recalling 4.4 million Polly Pocket magnetic play
sets after three children had to be rushed to the hospital because
they swallowed the tiny magnets that are a major part of the toy. Due
to a defect from an unknown source, the tiny magnets can detach
from the main part of the toy, and small children could potentially
swallow them. If a child swallows more than one magnet it
can attract other magnets and potentially cause blockage, perforation,
or infection.
As of December 5, 2006, there have been 170 reports to the Consumer
Product Safety Commission due to children swallowing magnets from
the Polly Pocket play set. As feared, there were three reports
of children that suffered serious injury due to swallowing more
than one magnet:
- A two-year-old child was hospitalized for seven days
- A seven-year-old child was hospitalized for 12 days
- An eight-year-old child was hospitalized for an undetermined
amount of time
The recalled Polly Pocket play sets are comprised of plastic dolls
approximately 1/8 of an inch in diameter with small magnets inside
their hands and feet. Small magnets are also found in many
accessories, such as Polly Pocket plastic clothing, hair pieces
and doll houses. According to sources within the company
and distribution warehouses, the Polly Pocket play sets already
on store shelves are not affected by this far-reaching recall.
The recalled lot numbers are:
Polly Pocket!™ Polly Place™ Hangin’ Out House™ (B2632)
Polly Pocket!™ Polly Place™ Treetop Clubhouse™ (B3158)
Polly Pocket!™ Spa Day™ (B3201)
