The Olympus Bronchoscope allegedly suffered a flaw that could be the cause of severe bacterial infections that were responsible for two deaths and 16 injuries. A bronchoscope consists of a small camera attached to a narrow cable that allows doctors to view the interior of lungs discover any conditions that could lead to future problems. Doctors later discovered that a serious flaw in the cap on the top of the device could cause it to separate after the procedure, creating an area easily overlooked while disinfecting the Olympus Bronchoscope after the procedure.
There were reports of several outbreaks of bacterial infection in a number of hospitals and clinics. Many of the victims of these infections were merely undergoing simple lung tests but developed severe and potentially life-threatening infections of the P. aeruginosa bacterium. Unfortunately, some of the people already had compromised pulmonary systems because of AIDS, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, or recent lung transplants, so a lung infection further complicated an already delicate situation.
The slow response of Olympus American may have contributed to further incidents of bacterial infection. Almost any person that underwent a bronchoscopy during the months between June 1, 2001 and February 4, 2002 could develop a potentially life-threatening pulmonary system infection. Although there is not enough hard data to predict the number of serious infections caused by the Olympus Bronchoscope, many doctors suspect there will continue to be more incidents in years to come.
If you or someone you love was the victim of a lung infection or other serious complication due to the Olympus Bronchoscope, you could have the right to seek financial restitution for your condition.
