On November 5, 2001, Baxter International Inc. announced several recalled dialysis filters could possibly have been responsible for a number of deaths under investigation in several countries. Baxter has ceased production in two factories in order to prevent further harm and injury and set aside $150 million dollars to prepare for litigation.
Baxter recalled its dialysis filters in October 2001 due to concerns a chemical used in the manufacturing could potentially caused many of the fatalities. This fluid called chemical solution 5070 is used to test for leaks in the filters, but allegedly a significant amount of it collected in the filters before they were packaged and distributed to medical personnel around the world.
The Food and Drug Administration believes that 51 people around the world died due to solution 5070 bloodstream contamination. United States reported four deaths, but as contaminated filters continue to replace older filters health experts suspect that there will be an increase in fatalities in years to come. There will likely hundreds if not thousands of deaths caused by this filter in years to come.
If a Baxter Inc. dialysis filter caused you or someone you know injury or loss, you may be able to collect compensation for your pain and suffering. You should not hesitate, for time restrictions set by the statute of limitations could end your case before it has a chance to begin. Financial restitution is within your grasp, but you must take action. Contact an experienced and knowledgeable defective medical device lawyer today.
