Boston Scientific Express Stent & Taxus Stent

With revenues of over $6.3 billion in 2005 alone, Boston Scientific is one of the world’s leading names in medical device manufacturing. Unfortunately, it is also among the world leaders in recalls of defective medical devices and equipment.

Doctors use angioplasties to remove blockages in arteries blocked by plaque to allow proper blood flow. An angioplasty consists of a small thin tube with a balloon on the end inserted into a blood vessel. When the balloon reaches the blockage the doctor inflates it which clears the block and allows blood to circulate. Newer angioplasty balloons have a mesh framework around them that provides the artery support and stability after the doctor removes the balloon.

The Boston Scientific Taxus Stent was one of the first angioplasty devices recalled. Doctors use this device during angioplasties to ensure proper circulation through an artery after they remove the small balloon. The outer layer of this thin metal framework is coated with medication to help prevent further blockage. Boston Scientific recalled 85,000 Taxus Stents due to the probability that balloon to become stuck in the artery which can require immediate bypass surgery to correct. According to recent figures this malfunction of the Taxus Stent has caused one death, 16 injuries, and 42 complaints of other problems.

The Boston Scientific Express Stent is a similar device with similar problems, as this stent also gives stability to arteries injured by cardiovascular diseases. Unfortunately these devices are also prone to failure because a specific defect that results in the balloons failing to properly deflate. This causes them to get stuck inside the artery as the doctors remove the long thin tube that provides inflation for the balloon. This defect forced Boston Scientific to recall more than 99,000 Express Stents and to request that hospitals stop using the device.
