The Food and Drug Administration alerted Pfizer, Inc in 2003 that the popular anti-depressant Zoloft was possibly causing some people to experience potentially suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Sadly, children, teenagers, and young adults are the most likely to experience these disturbing feelings.
Experts believe that Zoloft is a contributing factor in a large number of suicides in children, and thus Food and Drug Administration requested new warnings on the package of the drug that alerts doctors and patients of the increased likelihood of questionable behavior. The advisory panel of the FDA stated doctors must “carefully monitor patients receiving antidepressants for possible worsening of depression or suicidality, especially at the beginning of therapy or when the dose either decreases or increases.”
In another disturbing report, drugs like Zoloft were beginning to become associated with increased death rates in patients with existing heart disease. A study from Duke University discovered that three years after treatment with some antidepressants, people with heart disease who took antidepressants suffered a mortality rate of 21.4%, as compared to only 12.5% of those who had heart disease but did not take drugs. Discounting other potential factors such as age and general health, scientists calculated that antidepressant drugs could increase fatalities by 62%.
If Zoloft injured you or someone you love, you could be able to take legal action in order to recover losses based on your situation. If you hesitate you risk the statute of limitations in your state restricting the amount of time you have to pursue your case. If you let this time period expire you could lose the ability to collect financial compensation for your loss. Contact an experienced defective drug lawyer and discover your rights today.
