Doctors use the popular antibiotic Tequin is to treat older people with sinus, lung, and urinary tract infections. Furthermore, Tequin is used to treat a number of sexually transmitted diseases as well. In the same group of antibiotics as Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox, Tequin is an antibiotic of choice for many doctors across the country. Bristol Myers Squibb developed Tequin, and the Food and Drug Administration approved it in 1999. By 2006 doctors had written over 20 million prescriptions by 2006, and almost 5,000 new prescriptions for Tequin are written every day.
Unfortunately, Tequin has been the subject of recent studies that indicate could be a large factor in a number of abnormal blood sugar and diabetes-related conditions. According to the study, patients who use Tequin could be 17 times more likely to suffer from diabetes and four times more likely to require hospitalization. Bristol Myers Squibb took their time to alter the packaging for Tequin, eventually adding a warning of potential diabetic problems three years after it was released. As of 2006 there are no concrete plans to add the FDA’s strongest consumer warning label, a Black Box warning, to the package.
Additionally, there are reports linking Tequin to a disturbing trend of severe tendon ruptures, allergic reactions, diarrhea, seizures, psychosis, and cardiovascular side effects. Sadly, by 2006, Tequin is considered to be the main factor in the deaths of 16 people, but it remains on the market to possibly injure and maim more innocent victims.
