Procrit is a drug intended to relieve anemia caused by chemotherapy or chronic renal failure. These two conditions can interfere with the way the body produces the necessary number of red blood cells to survive, and a lack of sufficient red blood cells prevents oxygen from getting to the tissues and restricts cellular respiration. After a certain amount of time, tissues will begin to die without cellular respiration.
Procrit can alleviate some of the worst aspects of anemia, but recent studies call into question the nature of some extremely serious side effects. Procrit is not the best treatment option for patients suffering from leukemia due to their damaged bone marrows, and neither should patients with high blood pressure use the drug due to increased risk of cardiovascular events.
Two of the most dangerous side effects of Procrit are called red blood cell aplasia and aplastic anemia. Red blood cell aplasia interferes with the bone marrow produces the precursors that will eventually turn into red blood cells, while aplastic anemia prevents the bone marrow from producing any blood cells at all, including white blood cells and platelets. In advanced conditions victims may require constant blood transfusions because their bone marrow cannot easily replenish their supply of red blood cells that the body can no longer create.
If Procrit caused you or someone you love to suffer any of these debilitating side effects, you need to speak to a defective drug attorney right away. You may be able to pursue a financial settlement against those responsible for your condition, but if you wait laws called statute of limitations could restrict the amount of time you have to take action.
