The medical supply company Boston Scientific announced in 2005 that it was recalling over 40,000 angioplasty balloons due to a defect in the design that caused them to detach inside the patient. There have been eight instances of this occurrence, including three where subsequent surgery was needed to remove the device.
Sales for the Flextome cutting angioplasty balloon device totaled $13 million in 2005, but this was the second such recall of these devices in the past two years. The company is working with the Food and Drug Administration to oversee the recall of all the faulty medical devices.
